SPEAK OUT, RAVE ON
An interesting addition to the Ward Churchill thoughts in an earlier post, from John Nichols at The Nation. Free speech remains alive and well at the Univ. of Wisconsin, even for Prof. Churchill. The comments on my previous post are as interesting as this whole affair.

What's the magic word in Native American?...BINGO. They will take America back one gambler at a time. Who says patience doesn't pay?
I enjoyed the Nichols article. I agree with his views on Churchill and free speech. Universities are supposed to be places of thinking and debate, places that encourage an exploration of self-awareness. How can you do this if you aren't exposed to different ideas? By arguing against the methods of MLK and Gandhi, Churchill tramples on one of my most sacred beliefs. Yet I'm interested in what Churchill has to say; how can I understand my own point of view if I don't listen to those in opposition to it? My sacred assumptions need to be challenged, tested now and again.
The tragedy of the Churchill incident is how it will put a dampen on free speech in campuses all over the country. Churchill was made an example and no doubt many educators have toned down their lectures or at least thought about it twice after what happened to him.
I'm sure by now you know that UC President Elizabeth HOffman has resigned, the Churchill brouhaha being one of the reasons:
