BETHANNE PATRICK, GIRL BOOK MAVEN

I just discovered something interesting on the AOL book page - we now have a "Book Maven" here at AOL.  Yes, our very own.  I'm trying not to hate her, because apparently this is a paid job. One where she gets to read books, comment on them, chat about them, and so on.  Okay, she's already a book reviewer and a journalist (she says), so sure, this makes sense.  Sort of.  They could have asked me, couldn't they?  Nah, I'm too leftwing for AOL.  Anyway, check out her journal, lots of book info there.  She apparently also gets to sell books for Barnes and Noble.  She has a book pile entry, and all the book covers will link to B & N.  Never thought of that myself.  Of course I would, if they were paying me.

I'm not sure I can stomach this.  They're PAYING someone ELSE to read and write about BOOKS while we write away, filling up space for aol for free?

I will go check it out, but yes, they could have asked you.  After they asked me.

Oh, please,  "Books On My Nightstand"  -- wonder why she thinks THAT topic would be of interest?

Hi there Marigold2 and Oceanmrc:

Thanks for reading... and yes, this is a paid job... and yes, I really am a book reviewer, journalist, and former magazine editor. One of the things I'll be doing in The Book Maven is author interviews; the first one will go up later today. Any you'd like to see? Let me know...

I'm not actually shilling for Barnes & Noble; they're an AOL partner. That said, I'd love to hear from either of you (or anyone else in The Biblio Philes) about what kinds of buy-it links you'd like to see (or not see).

I'm also planning on a nice long post about what's on everyone else's nightstand fairly soon, so if you're interested, send me those titles (or just what you're reading).

Cheers,
Bethanne Patrick

I think that the book maven is an insightful writer, and a good critic/reviewer.  Although she looks young for this type of job, she has a resonance in her writing that I appreciate... I bet she has great taste in shoes, too.

yes, i think she's pretty good at what she's doing too.  i'm just jealous that she's doing it, and i'm not!  no malice intended, at all.  i intend to be a regular reader of her journal, in fact.

Oops -- I shouldn't have been so nasty.  My apologies.  I will freely admit to being totally jealous.

That`s very nice of you to pimp her. I`ll check it out, but the Biblio Philes pretty much answers my needs. "One where she gets to read books, comment on them, chat about them, and so on."....That describes you!

Sheesh, had no idea there was such a person.  Thanks for the tip.  And oh, AOL may be more open to lefties like us than we think.  De Profundis has been featured on several AOL screens, anywhere from the Journals section to Political Panel and even, gasp, the Finance Section!  =P
