LOOKING FOR YOUR OWN RING?
many journal writers/readers are LOTR fans, both the books and the films. or maybe mostly the films. how many of us have actually read The Hobbit and all three volumes of LOTR, i wonder? (really, 'fess up, i'd love to know. i'll start by telling you that, yes, in my 20's, i did indeed read all of these books.) anyway, this morning i have been reading a lot of political/environmental stuff all over the Internet. and, just in time to keep me from swallowing ground glass, i found this little article on alternet.org. a meditation on LOTR (films) as Dating Manual. nothing i need for my personal life, mind you, but an amusing read nonetheless. at least, an antidote to reading about global warming and rape of female military personnel, by male military personnel, in Iraq.

Cute article! I first saw it a couple days ago! As for the LOTR books, I have to admit, I'm one of those people who has never been able to read the books. For that reason, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get into the movies either, but I watched Fellowship of the Rings on DVD and LOVED it...as well as all the others since. And I did try to go back and read the books again after I saw the 1st two movies, still couldn't get thru them :(
PS...a comment about the rape of female personnel...I hate to admit it, but I'm not surprised, only saddened. While they try to dismiss the effect of their actions, I am convinced that the main reason some men are so afraid of gay men is because they're scared that they'll be treated by homosexuals the way they treat women themselves, and they know how damaging that would be!
I read LOTR and The Hobbit years ago, and recently re-read all of them. The books and the movies are, in my view, "guy stuff". I can put up with it better in the books because one can skip over the dead orcs, and some of the macho things. The Hobbit remains my favorite, though all the men and boys who read the books tend to dismiss it. As a friend of mine who saw the movies but hadn't read the books commented, "All the Hobbits are gay." from Peg
I started to read The Hobbit in high school but lost my way somewhere before college. The films have only sparked my interest in the books again. I've bought the books, and will be getting to them soon.
Peg, "The Hobbit" was my favorite too, no question about it. I'm hoping Tolkien's family let Peter Jackson make a movie of it....i think it would be delicious.
I've read "The Hobbit" and started the trilogy about four or five times. I've made it all the way through once. I usually get bogged down in the second part of the second book, "The Two Towers." It just goes on and on with Frodo, Sam and Gollum wandering around Mordor. The third book makes up for what you have to go through in the second.
I like the way they did it in the movies, intertwining the two storylines.
I saw the LOTR Dating Manual column a while back. My favorite one is the last...
"Some people will go to any lengths to get a ring; others, having had one for awhile, will go to any lengths to chuck it into a volcano."
Read 'em all, several times!
